Frequently Asked Questions

Anne Arundel County really has volunteer firefighters?

Yes! Anne Arundel County features the nation's premier combination fire department. A combination department means we have both full-time "career" firefighters who are paid to work 24 hour shifts, and volunteer staff who work as available. The training and responsibilities are the same, and at emergency calls it is impossible to tell the difference between our volunteers and career firefighters (unless you personally know them, of course).

Is there an application fee?

Yes, AVFD requires an application fee of $45, which covers the cost of your first year's dues and an AVFD T-shirt, which will be presented after you are voted into probationary membership

Are there benefits to volunteering at a fire department in Maryland?

Does AVFD have minimum volunteer time committments?

Yes. For riding members, it is expected that you spend at least 24 hours per month at the station ready to respond to emergencies. Adminstrative members are required to be active on a least one company committee, and regularly staff company events and fundraisers

How do I become a volunteer firefighter?

It all starts with your application. Our membership coordinator will set up an in-person interview to outline the experience and expectations of the role. From there, you will begin your basic firefighting and EMS training. Following classroom training, you will be paired with a senior firefighter or EMT to begin your 'clearance' packet, which will orient you with AVFD equipment and SOPs. This will allow you to being 'riding' the apperatus and responding to emergency calls.
