Frequently Asked Questions

Anne Arundel County really has volunteer firefighters?

Yes! Anne Arundel County features the nation's premier combination fire department. A combination department means we have both full-time "career" firefighters who are paid to work 24 hour shifts, and volunteer staff who work as available. The training and responsibilities are the same, and at emergency calls it is impossible to tell the difference between our volunteers and career firefighters (unless you personally know them, of course).

Is there an application fee?

There is no fee to apply to Arundel Volunteer Fire Department

Are there benefits to volunteering at a fire department in Maryland?

In addition to being a part of an awesome team doing a job available nowhere else? Yes!

Does AVFD have minimum volunteer time commitments?

Yes. For riding members, it is expected that you spend at least 48 hours per quarter at the station ready to respond to emergencies. Administrative members are required to be active on a least one company committee, and regularly staff company events and fundraisers.

How do I become a volunteer firefighter?

It all starts with your application. Our membership committee will set up an in-person interview to outline the experience and expectations of the role. From there, you will begin your basic firefighting and EMS training. Following classroom training, you will receive in-house training at the station to orient you with AVFD’s equipment and procedures. This will allow you to begin riding and responding to emergency calls independently.

Do I have to wait to finish class to ride?

No! We want to get you on the apparatus as soon as possible. Members who successfully complete a physical, background check, and orientation training can join our Observer Program. This allows you to ride the ambulance or fire engine before and during your classes. EMT students have additional opportunities to participate on the ambulance in order to fulfill state licensure requirements.
